Katika was the founder and director of an Artist Run Initative in Narrabeen, Sydney. The ARI was located out the back of a funky cocktail bar, inside the Narrabeen RSL. Yaw waY existed from 2019 - 2022. Sadly, the Narrabeen RSL is now shut.
The gallery, a kooky space with black walls and odd pipes coming out of the walls. generated over $10,000 in sales for local Artists on the Northern beaches in 2019. A volunteer run gallery, aimed to help local and outsider artists have a space to exhibit. The opening nights attracted 150 -300 people from all over Sydney. The platform helped forge some life long friendships and creative networks. Throughout the three years, Katika and Yaw waY won three grants, put on 6 group shows, supported local musicians, live performances, photographers, body painting, live graffiti, short films, volunteer opportunities and so much more. You can see more about this project on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/yaw_way_platform/
Some of the volunteers went on to start their own artist run spaces such as Little Yellow studio in Stanmore and The garage collective on the northern beaches. Katika now volunteers at DRAWspace in Newtown.
Stairwell Mural Project was run by Sharon Billinge and Katika Schultz, collecting interest and subject matter from locals and club members as well as inviting them to partake in the painting. Funded by Northern Beaches Council through a creative grant.
Festival of Murals was funded by Northern Beaches Council through a creative grant. The festival involved nine local mural artists of various skill level to pair up and make new work together on site at Narrabeen RSL.
Narrabeen RSL print studio would have been an epic printmaking studio, Saxon Duke did an amazing indoor mural, the press was bought from Victoria and building additions were set to go. Sadly the RSL shut down. The press is now in Little Sun Studios in Mona Vale, available for hire. See projects.
